Atonement - Ian McEwan
The play - for which Briony had designed the posters, programs and ticket, constructed the sales booth out of a folding screen tipped on its side, and lined the collection box in red crepe paper -- was written by her in a two-day tempest of composition, causing her to miss a breakfast and a lunch.
"It was Robbie, wasn't it?"
The maniac. She wanted to say the word.
Lola said nothing and did not move.
Briony said it again, this time without the trace of a question.
It was a statement of face. "It was Robbie."
